Excitement fills students and staff at Aquinas College as
the news comes through that Aquinas College is officially a Fairtrade college!
The prized status now puts Aquinas College in an
exclusive group on Colleges and Universities who share the status, these
including Oxford Brookes University and Birmingham.
The award was achieved by the hard work of the Fairtrade
Group. This group was a built up of Members of the Student Council and staff, who
worked hard during the past term to achieve this award. Their work included
introducing Fairtrade produce into college, selling Fairtrade produce
throughout the year, educating students about Fairtrade and working with local
business and communities to reach a more Fairtrade college.
“This is great news
for not just the Student Council but for the college as a whole!” Student
President Natalia Dawson said when she heard of the news. “We hope to make it a bigger part of college life next year with the
help of the Student Council!”
This is another achievement the Student Council has
achieved in 2011/2012 term. Student Council members always look to support
worthy causes and this has been shown with support for the Teenage Cancer Trust
and more recently partnering with the Safe Heaven Children’s Trust to host a
Silent Auction in September
“It is a magnificent achievement for the College and a
testament to those who worked so hard to obtain the award. This award show
Aquinas’ commitment to others and a sustainable future”
New Vice President Scott Thomas.
When you head back you’ll see more Fairtrade products in
the canteen and Café! And also the Fairtrade group will be planning more
exciting events for 2012/2013 term!
